From the looks of your post, my guess is that you have a keyboard issue. Most likely the problem is the keyboard itself. Here is how I would troubleshoot the problem. Now follow closely because you have to do this one step at a time to properly isolate the source of the problem.

First, if you have another computer nearby with a known working keyboard, this is a good thing. If not, go to a computer store and purchase a new keyboard. They are inexpensive, and you probably want a new one anyway since your old one has bits of french fries and finger nail clippings in it. Besides, those Mountain Dew and coffee stains are disgusting.

1) Power down the other computer that has the known working keyboard.
2) Disconnect the keyboard.
3) Power down the computer with the keyboard problem.
4) Disconnect the keyboard. (At this point it is very important not to get the keyboards mixed up--perhaps you should first label the "bad" keyboard using a piece of paper a marker and tape.
5) Leaving the computer turned off, connect the good keyboard.
6) Power on the computer and test the keyboard.

Did the problem go away?

Yes? problem solved. Purchase a new keyboard and you are set.

No? Follow along:

1) Find a known competent person. Preferrably someone who can hold a job and does not live in mom`s basement. Have this person type something using the keyboard.

Does the keyboard seem to work fine?

Yes? Then we have found the problem: You are a moron. It`s OK! You are not alone. There are hundreds of thousands of other morons who have found ways to live relatively happy lives. Just keep smiling, and don`t worry about your "keyboard problem". It is the least of your worries. Instead, be concerned with being close to water and electrical appliances at the same time.

No? Then there is most likely a problem with the motherboard or at least with the keyboard port that is soldered to the motherboard. In this case, the usual fix is to replace the motherboard. If the computer is very old, you may just want to buy a new computer.

fantastic post troy! I`m sure you`ve helped many people here a CT who seem to have the same problem...although I suspect tgreer has an entirely different problem - any suggestions there?

I`m not sure about tgreer, but my suspicion is that tgreer is ddd`s mom. ddd probably tried to get his/her mom to help, and as you can see, it runs in the family.

I do what I can to help. It`s my way of giving back to the IT community that fostered me to be the guru I am today. If I can help just one "ddd" out there, the journey has been worth the miles.
